Dr. Kanimozhi Sadasivam

Ion channels are transmembrane proteins that facilitate the transport of ions across the plasma membrane to regulate cell membrane potential. Several ion channels have been identified in the germ cells, including sperm. Mammalian sperm cells must respond to cues originating from along the female reproductive tract and from the layers of the egg in order to complete their fertilization journey. Dynamic regulation of ion signalling is, therefore, essential for sperm cells to adapt to their constantly changing environment. Electrophysiological studies have confirmed the importance of the principal Ca2+-selective plasma membrane ion channel CatSper, for sperm activity. Similarly, NaV channels could play a crucial role in noncapacitated sperm and in the initial capacitation steps. Thus sperm ion channels and membrane receptors are attractive targets for both the development of contraceptives and infertility treatment drugs. Furthermore, in this era of assisted reproductive technologies, understanding the signalling processes implicated in defective sperm function, particularly those arising from genetic abnormalities, is of the utmost importance not only for the development of infertility treatments but also to assess the overall health of a patient and his children.

Dr. Indu Verma

Dr Indu Verma, is currently Professor in the Department of Biochemistry atPostgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh. She started her research career in the field of tuberculosis when she joined for PhD in1988. Since then she is working on various aspect of tuberculosis primarily focussing on the studies on preclinical testing of mycobacterial proteins based anti-tuberculosis vaccine and development of diagnostic tests for tuberculosis (TB). In recent years, from her work on the clinical samples from pulmonary and extrapulmonary tuberculosis patients, in vivo expressed mycobacterial transcripts at the site of infection have been identified that are being explored for the development of molecular diagnostic tests particularly for difficult to diagnose paucibacillary types of TB such as pleural tuberculosis. Further, proteins encoded by in vivo expressed mycobacterial genes at the site of infection are also being investigated for the development of rapid antigen/antibody detection immunodiagnostic tests for tuberculosis. These studies have further provided an insight in the pathogenesis of some less studied forms of tuberculosis such as bone TB and TB of eye. From her work, she has published ~90 papers in journals of national and international repute and received several award including two-time recipient of Fogarty International AIDS & TB International Training & Research Fellowship and recently Louis Pasteur award for her work in the field of tuberculosis. She is also reviewer for several national and international journals and on the expert review panel of ICMR and project reviewer for MRC, UK and MRC, South Africa.
